State of Caliber

Caliber iOS in March 2025

The idea started with my partner and I at Chick-fil-A playing a game of "Would You Rather" with our favorite watches. We had so much fun that I spent that night doing a very first mockup of what went on to be my biggest project yet.

Caliber iOS is a game / tool that helps you find your favorite watches and everything you want to know about them. The most basic game mode, Freeform, feeds the user an infinite number of 1v1 matchups between two random watches, prompting the user to pick one over the other. When a watch is chosen, the user is shown relevant stats like personal and global pick rates and the position of that watch amongst the users' favorite watches.

Up-Down is a flexible mode that allows users to add watches to a familiar ranking format game, and functions as a handy tool to allow users to rank groups of watches. This game mode includes templates showcasing the collections of celebrities, popular figures in the watch industry, and curated collections by our Caliber team.

Other game modes include Podium, Gauntlet, and our most advanced mode — Caliber mode, which utilizes a recommendation algorithm and deep learning platform. When all five game modes are complete, Caliber will be out of beta.

The app also features Statistics Overview and Advanced Statistics pages that provide the user with hundreds, if not thousands of data points showing the users' preferences for watches, brands, sizing, pricing, manufacturers, etc. as well as the Collection feature, which allows the user to organize their favorite watches into custom collections for easy access in game modes and to track their changing tastes.

Caliber V2 is a huge leap forward

Compared to Caliber V1, which has a design philosophy closer to a shrunken, narrow webpage, Caliber V2 provides a cleaner, more focused look. Caliber V2 has smaller, thinner fonts, a darker background and cooler-tone grey sections. These changes make it look more polished and professional, but the increase in contrast also suits the use of more saturated accent colors like purple (Up-Down), yellow (Freeform), green (Gauntlet), and pink (Podium). This provides a stronger balance between game and tool.

Strength in statistics

Caliber Agency is a venture with significant potential. Each user generates thousands of specific data points per hour of active use. By leveraging the proper tools, powerful insights can be drawn from the data and used to inform decisions in watch marketing, sales, production, as well as analyzing trends and competition in specific price segments. When effectively used, the user base of Caliber is a large, organic, reliable focus group.

The infrastructure for the Caliber Agency is set up within the app and backend, and as we go into beta testing, we'll be looking to see how we can find the strongest data to help get things up and running.
